AMD introduces groundbreaking laptop processors with a dedicated integrated engine for Artificial Intelligence.

The Ryzen 7040HS processors are the first to include an artificial intelligence engine.

The tech world is currently in the midst of a true revolution driven by Artificial Intelligence. Projects like ChatGPT have showcased the potential of generative AI, and this technology is finding its way into programs like Photoshop, Microsoft Word, and many others. However, all these AI tools share a common requirement: the need for an external server connection to operate.

The average user often lacks the necessary hardware to run Artificial Intelligence models locally. AMD aims to revolutionize this landscape with its cutting-edge Ryzen 7040HS processor lineup, becoming the first to integrate its own Artificial Intelligence engine directly into the chip. This will enable the execution of programs that rely on AI for a wide range of tasks.

The tech industry is currently immersed in a true revolution driven by Artificial Intelligence. Projects like ChatGPT have showcased the potential of generative AI, and this technology is finding its way into popular programs like Photoshop and Microsoft Word, among others. However, all these AI tools share a fundamental feature: they require a connection to an external server to function.

The issue lies in the fact that the average user lacks the necessary hardware to run Artificial Intelligence models locally. In this context, AMD seeks to change this reality. The new Ryzen 7040HS processor series is groundbreaking in incorporating its own Artificial Intelligence engine directly onto the chip, enabling the execution of programs that rely on AI for a wide range of tasks.

The reader might consider this an impossible feat, and they wouldn`t be entirely wrong. In a presentation we had access to, company representatives acknowledge that they are taking their first steps and that there is still a long way to go to match the level of servers. However, at the same time, this initial step becomes a reality because Artificial Intelligence is already present in computers, both in Windows systems and in widely known programs, such as the aforementioned Photoshop.

In essence, there is a growing demand for products that accelerate Artificial Intelligence processing. At AMD, they liken this demand to what happened in the mid-1990s when the first 3D accelerator graphics cards emerged. Up until then, video games and applications requiring three-dimensional graphics depended exclusively on CPU power to perform the necessary calculations. The arrival of hardware specifically designed for these tasks significantly accelerated 3D graphics development in just a few years. AMD hopes that the step they have taken today will have a similar impact on the industry.

This gives birth to Ryzen AI, a platform dedicated exclusively to the execution of Artificial Intelligence based on neural networks. In the new Ryzen 7040HS processor series, a small part of the chip is designed to process data flows rather than following the conventional structure of algorithms in a typical program. The XDNA AI Engine is the engine, separated from the main processor structure, intended for such executions. Without delving into technical details, we can say that cache memory management has no impact, thus improving the flow of data between the `neurons`.

In fact, Windows already includes Artificial Intelligence features that can be used with this engine. For example, Windows 11 incorporates two AI-based technologies for webcams: one adjusts the image to make it appear as if we are looking directly at the camera instead of the screen, and the other recognizes the background and blurs it to protect our privacy.

AMD expects that in the coming months, more programs and projects will leverage this engine, including personal assistants and content creation applications. The company has already announced that Adobe Premiere Pro will be updated to harness the hardware designed for AI. This positions AMD in a very advantageous position since, for now, these are the only computer processors capable of running AI locally.

More powerful processors.

More powerful processors.

Ryzen AI is not the only innovation in this lineup, led by the impressive Ryzen 9 7940HS with 8 cores and 16 threads, capable of reaching 5.2 GHz. However, what may be even more remarkable is that AMD is targeting a type of laptop that is thinner and lighter than those produced so far. Specifically, these processors are aimed at 14-inch laptops that offer both portability and performance. The lineup is as follows:

Ryzen 9 7940HS - 8 cores, 16 threads. 4.0 GHz (up to 5.2 GHz). Cache memory: 24 MB. TDP: 35-54 W. Ryzen AI.
Ryzen 7 7840HS - 8 cores, 16 threads. 3.8 GHz (up to 5.1 GHz). Cache memory: 24 MB. TDP: 35-54 W. Ryzen AI.
Ryzen 5 7640HS - 6 cores, 12 threads. 4.3 GHz (up to 5.0 GHz). Cache memory: 22 MB. TDP: 35-54 W. Ryzen AI.
To demonstrate the potential of this lineup, AMD presented graphics that speak for themselves: the new Ryzen 9 7940HS outperformed Intel`s competition (the Core i9-13900H) in almost all tests, even though they were conducted on a 14-inch laptop compared to Intel`s 16-inch laptop. This difference is crucial because a larger size also means better cooling and, therefore, a greater margin to harness the power of the chips. The 14-inch AMD laptop was only 1.78 cm thick, while the 16-inch Intel model was 2.2 cm thick.

Despite this disadvantage, AMD`s new model showed significantly better performance in some tasks and matched Intel in those where it didn`t perform as well. In content creation, AMD claims its processor is 15% superior, and in gaming, it could become the new benchmark for gaming laptops, offering 5% better performance in games like F1 2021, Rainbow Six: Siege, or Total War: Warhammer 3, as well as 13% in Borderlands 3. Even when it lost, it wasn`t by much, just 2% less in Cyberpunk 2077.

The leap in power we are seeing in x86 processors is evident, especially when brands are finally daring to compare themselves to Apple, which surprised everyone with its transition to ARM. The Ryzen 9 7940HS outperformed an Apple M2 Pro-based MacBook by 7% in Adobe Photoshop and by 11% in Passmark CPUMark. Of course, all these data come directly from AMD, as the press has not had the opportunity to test the hardware yet, so, as always, we should take them with caution. But the improvement seems evident.

Although some of the laptops using these processors already have dedicated GPUs, it`s also good to know that the integrated GPU, the Radeon 780M, has improved and now allows for gaming at 60 frames per second and 1080p resolution in games like Grand Theft Auto V. The latest improvement is in energy efficiency, which allows for up to 9 hours of video playback with a 68.1 Wh battery.

The New Razer Blade 14.

This is such a significant release that Razer wanted to be the first to confirm a new laptop based on these Ryzen processors. However, it has already been confirmed that other manufacturers like Asus ROG, HP, Lenovo, and Acer will have their own alternatives. The new Razer Blade 14 will be the model to debut the Ryzen 9 7940HS with Ryzen AI, the new 14-inch model that promises to be the most powerful yet. How powerful is it? Razer boasts improvements of 22% in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 19% in Cyberpunk 2077, and 17% in Far Cry 6, so there are clearly significant changes.

In addition to the processor, this laptop makes the leap to the new generation of Nvidia graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 4070 with a TDP of up to 140 W to achieve up to 33% more power compared to the previous generation. Such power has required improvements in cooling, with a new vapor chamber system that uses even thinner fins (only 0.05 mm) and covers 59% more heat dissipation area.
